Dogmovers Employment Opportunities

We currently require a replacement driver for our QLD run, available immediately as a permanent Position. Scroll down for further details regarding this position.  Posted 12/11/08

We  do not currently require any drivers for our NSW runs however it is expected that a position will be available early in the New year.  Posted 12/11/08

We will be considering a new position in 2009 for a Motor vehicle Maintenance / relief driver role. This may initially be a part time role and will suit a person with good mechanical diagnostic skills wanting a varied range of responsibilities.

Queensland Run,  Driver / Animal handler – Currently required as at 12/11/08

Dogmovers is a small business based on the Gold Coast. We transport pets throughout Northern NSW and most of Queensland. We operate similarly to a long distance bus service rather than a pet taxi type service, with set weekly runs operated to a timetable.

We have one weekly Queensland run operating between Thursday and Tuesday each week. This run operates from South east QLD up to Townsville or Cairns on an alternating fortnightly basis.
Generally the job will involve between four and six days or part days per week on the road with a break of two and a half days per week between Tuesday and Thursday.

The days on the road can be long, some days you would be expected to be working from 6am until 9pm or later, including customer service and animal care duties. It is not unusual to cover up to 1000km in a day depending on which run you are operating on.
Traditionally we sleep in the vans whilst away and our vans are set up very basically to allow for this.  We will shortly be upgrading to a larger vehicle on this run to allow for better sleeping accommodation for the driver.  We do use motels for accommodation from time to time depending on which vehicle is being used and the number of animals being transported on any given run.

No special license is required at this point in time, our current vehicles are Ford transit vans or utes. However we will shortly upgrade to a Toyota Coaster bus requiring a Light Rigid license. It would be OK for any suitable applicant to upgrade to the higher license prior to the vehicle being put into service.

It is necessary to have some experience towing as we do use dog floats as well, the largest is 6 metres long and weighs up to 1.5 tonnes fully loaded. It would be similar to towing a small to medium caravan. the largest combination of our vehicles and trailers would be approximately 13m (40ft) long. Some basic mechanical aptitude would obviously be useful. It is inevitable due to the high mileage we cover that breakdowns, punctures and mishaps do occur from time to time.

Our vehicles and trailers have built-in cages of various sizes. The number of animals transported on any given run can vary greatly however it is usual to be moving 25 - 35 pets per week on the QLD runs.

Animal care duties on the job involve feeding, keeping the animals cages clean and tidy, walking dogs, handling a range of animals including cats and the occasional goat, sheep, pig etc. as well as being aware of and responsible for the general condition and wellbeing of the animals in your care. There are some obvious risks associated with animal handling, particularly dogs. We move them all, from tiny to extra large and from friendly to grumpy. We do avoid outright dangerous dogs but some experience or affinity with dogs and animals in general is obviously necessary.

Our drivers are responsible for cleaning and disinfecting their vehicle after each trip .. This would generally take a couple of hours at the end of each run.

We pay a daily rate, including a tax free allowance for days on the road. This position would be expected to attract a wage of between $880 and $1260 per week before tax dependant upon which run you do. Out of this wage you would be expected to provide your own food etc. All Vehicle and accommodation costs etc are paid by us.

Whilst we want to fill the role as soon as possible we recognize that it is an awkward time of year to be starting a new job and we are also going to be very particular about who we employ. This is the most demanding of our driving positions due to the longer runs and the fact that they run through the weekends. We have had many applicants who thought the job would suit only to let us down because they subsequently could not handle the driving hours or the days away from home. We have also had staff who loved it.

This is a casual position, i.e. no holiday pay etc but it is consistent and permanent for the right person. We usually have a break of a couple of weeks at Xmas and weeks off are able to be arranged.

We are willing to consider more than one person sharing the role and it would also be suitable for a couple who like traveling together. In all of the above there is some flexibility that we have to tailor the position to a particular person. We will consider everyone on their merits however in general we are looking for someone with the following qualities:

Living in South East Queensland. We are based on the Gold coast, you only have to get here and home again once a week so you don’t have to be nearby.  I would suggest though that a 2 hour drive is about the most you would want to be commuting. You will need your own transport to and from work as well.

Mature, at least in mind if not in body. We have the obvious issue of motor vehicle insurance suggesting we employ those over 25 but we have also found that a more mature person usually takes a calmer, more balanced attitude towards the job and is more settled in their family and social life.

From a suitable family situation. This position is less suited to some people due to their family situation for obvious reasons. It is generally not suited to a person with young children or who is not used to being away from their partner regularly. You will be away between three and five nights a week and this will cause stress on your family even if it does not worry you. In some cases even pets at home will cause a problem. Think about your own situation, does it really suit?  If it helps, we are Ok with your partner traveling with you, even a child in the holidays. The role would suit a confident and experienced driver. You will need to be able to drive in all conditions, country and city, day and night, towing a trailer. You would be covering around 200,000 kms per year. Despite all our best attempts to ensure our vehicles are up to scratch, breakdowns occur and accidents happen.

A confident Map reader. Mostly we stick to well defined routes that we use regularly. In Brisbane we have regular pick up points. But we also need to collect pets from peoples homes at times. You will need to be able to find your way around.

Service orientated. We are trying hard to build our business through the provision of a superior service and a professional attitude. We cannot please everyone all of the time, but we can try.

Suited to working with animals. This does not necessarily mean an “animal lover”. We need someone that is confident with and cares for the animals but has a strong enough personality to take charge of a large stubborn dog when it is required. Some experience breeding, showing, caring for or training animals would be an advantage.

Not afraid to get their hands dirty.  That being said we do of course provide rubber gloves for the really dirty work. Somebody's got to do it and it ain't always pretty.

Happy with their own company.  Driving tends to get a bit boring after a few hours, some enjoy it, some hate it.

Stable. We want someone who will be happy with this position for a while rather than someone who wants to fill in some time on the way to something else. It takes around 3 months to settle into this role.

That should give you a better idea. Still interested?

You will need to talk with David or Sierra. Call the office on (07) 5530 2710 in the first instance. If we are not there we will call you back, don’t forget we are on the road a lot ourselves until we fill this position.
